Hope not lost in Zimbabwe

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The interesting news that I am hearing and reading about today from Bloomberg News is that beleaguered Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has agreed to a constitutional amendment that will create the posts of a prime minister and two deputy prime ministers in Zimbabwe. The plan is that MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai will  become prime minister, if current talks to resolve the elections crisis succeed, and make for a peaceful deal in the country.

This is great news!. For one thing, Zimbabwe has been hit by a cholera outbreak in which hundreds of children and adults have died. The situation there is compounded by poverty, unemployment, inflation and political instability. Far from chaos, it appears that we might be in for a sweet surprise for Zimbabwe on the fringes of 2008.

CNN Heroes is Today!

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Hey Africa,

I’ll be watching CNN today for the second annual CNN heroes. Will you be watching? I like to tell you why I’ll be watching. For one reason, there are Africans featured prominently in the nominations.

My personal favorite is Yohaness Gebregeorgis, founder of Ethiopia Reads with offices in downtown Denver. I have many friends from Ethiopia and my support is not because I want to honor Ethiopians, but because Yohaness Gebregeorgis is a champion for Education in Africa.

While chewing your thanksgiving Turkey later today, please take a moment to watch CNN’s heroes and cheer for Africa.

Happy Thanksgiving!
